The Austin South community is located south of the downtown area and Lady Bird Lake. This location is home to several attractions and is a popular neighborhood among Austin’s younger residents. It is easily accessible from the Downtown area, simply take either the Lamar, Congress or 1st Bridge over the lake to reach this working class neighborhood.

This community has long been the center of Austin’s counterculture and has rapidly grown over the years to include many must-see attractions that appeal to residents and tourists alike. With so much to see and do in the area, Austin South, it is easy to see why so many individuals who consider themselves to be artistic, natural, or part of the “hippie” lifestyle choose to live in the area. The southern region of the City of Austin is home to several working class communities. High-end boutiques and fine dining opportunities have led many middle to upper class Austin residents to relocate to the area, which has also led to a rise in home costs in recent years.

Many of the homes in the Austin South community feature a good mixture of modernized amenities within a traditional setting. For families with school-age children, nearby public schools include Joslin Elementary, Covington Middle, and Crockett High School, all are located less than 3.5 miles away.
There are several smaller communities within the Austin South Neighborhood. Travis Heights is made up of rolling hills, beautiful landscapes and older homes that were built as early as the 1920’s. It is the most expensive community in the area. Other notable communities include Bouldin Creek which is a hip and laid-back area that features a good mixture of apartments, bungalows and large modernized luxury homes.
The Barton Hills community is the ideal spot in Austin South for families. It is filled with ranch homes built around the 1960’s and is close to Zilker Park, a popular location for outdoor activities and home to the Barton Springs Pool.

Along with several outdoor activities to enjoy at Zilker Park and nearby Lady Bird Lake, there are also several shopping and fine dining opportunities to try out in the area which include locally owned facilities. For shopping, many local residents like to visit South Congress Avenue, also referred to as SoCo. This is the main drag in South Austin that is filled with upscale boutiques and condominiums. For those interested in trying out the local cuisine, top restaurants in Austin South include Dolce Neve gelato shop, El Gallo Tex Mex restaurant and Bouldin Creek Coffeehouse.

Austin South is home to many festivals throughout the year so be sure to keep an eye on the community calendar so that you never miss a special event. Nearby Zilker Park hosts several of these festivals such as the Zilker Park Kite Festival held in March, and the Blues on the Green event held every other Wednesday throughout the summer.
Many of the restaurants located in the Austin South community have a full bar available which provide plenty of nightlife entertainment for local residents. The Continental Club located at 1315 South Congress is a legendary venue that has been in the area since 1957 and is a popular spot for live music.
